eBooks

This is where we started, some 17 years ago, publishing digital books from our original headquarters in Riverdale, Georgia (hence our original name, Riverdale  Electronic Books, now one of our imprints). In those days, we published for the old HiEbook device, and also sold MS-ebooks through Amazon.com. Both formats have long since vanished, so today our eBooks are published in Amazon Kindle format, and Barnes & Noble’s nook format. Some titles are also available from Apple. Ebook titles range from contemporary fiction, to plays, to classic literature, much of the latter heavily annotated. This page also lists some titles published by CEB Pubs, most available in multiple formats, which has taken over some of our classics line.

A Voyage to the South Sea, by William Bligh

A carefully annotated edition of Lieutenant William Bligh’s 1792  revised edition of his account of the voyage of His Majesty’s Armed Transport Bounty to Tahiti, the stay on that island, and the subsequent mutiny and Bligh’s epic open-boat voyage to Timor with as many of the loyal crew as could be fitted into the boat. Also includes transcripts of some of Bligh’s letters from Timor, and the defence submitted in his 1805 court martial for “abusive behaviour” towards a subordinate officer in HMS Warrior (Bligh was found technically guilty, but the sentence amounted to nothing more than being admonished to watch his language in the future).

The Lost World, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Perhaps Doyle’s second best-known character, Professor Challenger, was introduced in this book. Challenger leads an expedition to an isolated plateau in the South American jungles, where they encounter dinosaurs, primitive hominids, and other dangers. The science doesn’t hold up that well, but would have been right up to date when this was written, making this a kind of historic document as well as a rip-roaring adventure story. Annotated edition, published by CEB Pubs.

The New Revelation, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Annotated, Exposed, and Debunked Edition)

Later in life, Doyle developed a strong attachment to the Spiritualist movement. Unfortunately, the critical thinking skills he brought to his medical practice and fiction writing somehow failed him, and he was apparently happy to accept even the flimsiest evidence if it appeared to support the idea of life after death and spirit communication. This book was one result. Very heavily annotated, this edition preserves Doyle’s text, but adds copious notes (the notes very nearly exceed the original text) and a new Afterword. If you’re curious about Spiritualism and the ways in which con artists and tricksters were able to swindle gullible clients, this edition of Doyle’s book is just what you’re looking for. Published by CEB Pubs.

The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells

A new edition of H.G. Wells’ classic novella, including a large number of explanatory notes. This tale of the “Time Traveller,” otherwise unnamed, and his experiences in the distant future has been enjoyed for over a century, and filmed multiple times. Whether you agree with Wells’ evolutionary conceptions or not–that humanity will eventually split into a rather child-like species of carefree innocents and a subterranean, cannibalistic industrial group that exploits, in effect, farms, the surface dwellers–the story remains fascinating. This CEB Pubs edition is a great addition to any science fiction library. Not for sale in the UK, EU, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Norway, or Romania until January 1, 2017.

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella is presented here in a carefully edited, fully annotated electronic edition. Henry Jekyll’s attempt to purge the evil from humanity by administering a potent chemical mixture to himself backfires, and instead of becoming a purer, more angelic man, he finds himself transformed into the sensual, heartless beast, Edward Hyde. Then he discovers that one of the ingredients is no longer effective, and he may be trapped in Hyde’s murderous persona for good. Published by CEB Pubs.

Dracula, by Bram Stoker

Most of what we now consider vampire lore actually comes from Bram Stoker’s novel, including shape-shifting, the inability to cross running water, fear of anything holy, and so forth. (This does not include vulnerability to sunlight, as Dracula is obviously able to walk about London during the day. It was the 1922 vampire movie, Nosferatu, that introduced that cliché.) This CEB Pubs edition is heavily annotated, and includes a new Foreword.

John Dene of Toronto, by Herbert Jenkins

This delightful novel introduces the rather exasperating Canadian scientist, adventurer, and political annoyance, John Dene, as he wends his way through the World War I era British Admiralty with a new submarine design he’s convinced will turn around the war at sea, but only if he’s given command and allowed to use his own crew. While he’s setting this up, he has to deal with an annoying German spy, finds himself romancing his secretary, and dealing with the mysterious Department Z and it’s chief operative, Malcolm Sage. It’s all very mysterious, particularly when Dene seems to undergo a complete change of personality, and then gets himself kidnapped, forcing Sage to come to the rescue. Annotated edition, published by CEB Pubs.

Malcolm Sage, Detective, by Herbert George Jenkins

In this post World War I novel, John Dene has been made a baronet, and with the connivance of his wife, decides to set up his old Section Z operative, Malcolm Sage, in the private detective business. This volume is something of a cross between a novel and a short story collection, and very entertaining. Sage is a “scientific” investigator, not to mention generally rather annoying, and the police are, following British mystery tradition, rather less competent than their real-life counterparts, which is no doubt why they always seem to need help from amateurs to solve their cases. Annotated edition, published by CEB Pubs.

Idylls of the King, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

A nice edition of this cycle of long, blank verse poems telling the story of King Arthur and his knights, by England’s longest-serving Poet Laureate, and the first poet to be elevated to the peerage for his literary work. Published and distributed by CEB Pubs.

The PaxAm Solution, by Steven R. Bartman

This fascinating techno-thriller might be called an undiscovered gem. When it comes to writing a compelling story, Bartman ranks with Tom Clancy at his best. The last 200 pages depict a battle during a hurricane so intense that most readers find it next to impossible to stop for anything. This story of a massive Federal prison for incorrigibles, the schemes of billionaire international arms dealer Victor Zeiss to escape, and how it all comes together on a stormy night is a can’t miss read.

The Lair of the White Worm, by Bram Stoker

The Lair of the White Worm was Bram Stoker’s final work, and is certainly one of the strangest. The “worm” is an ancient dragon, dwelling deep in a well on the estate called Diana’s Grove. Perhaps. Or perhaps the estate’s owner, Lady Arabella March, is a demonic shape-shifter? Annotated, and edited slightly to tone down a bit of racist language. Published by CEB Pubs.

King Solomon’s Mines, by H. Rider Haggard

The story that introduced Haggard’s most famous character, Allan Quatermain, to the reading public. While not chronologically the first of the Quatermain stories, this is the book that started it all, as the legendary African hunter leads a small expedition to a remote region of Africa and rediscovers King Solomon’s ancient diamond mines. Problems with witch finders and a usurping African king complicate matters.

Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott

An annotated edition of Scott’s story of chivalry, Norman/Saxon conflict, political intrigue, and family conflict. Ivanhoe is heroic, the villains are nasty, and knighthood is in full flower. Published by CEB Pubs.

Eighteen Sermons & Two Divrei Torah, by Rabbi Yaakov ben Avrohom

Thoughts on the Devil and Various Cults, by Rabbi Yaakov ben Avrohom

Originally written in 1990, during the satanic cult scares, this slender volume looks at cults in general, Satanism, and whether there is even a reason to believe in an actual devil. The author’s general opinion seems to be that there isn’t, and having a devil really serves as little more than an excuse for bad behavior.
